Summary

Cannabis adds to the sedative and psychomotor-impairing effects of diazepam, increasing the risk of drowsiness, impaired coordination and poor judgment. Cannabidiol may also raise benzodiazepine exposure by inhibiting CYP enzymes.

What this interaction means in plain words

Diazepam and Marijuana can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive CNS depression, with possible CYP3A4/CYP2C19 inhibition by cannabinoids (notably cannabidiol) reducing diazepam clearance.

What to do

Counsel patients to avoid driving or hazardous tasks and monitor for excessive sedation. Reduce the diazepam dose if oversedation develops.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
