Summary

Diethylpropion is a sympathomimetic appetite suppressant, and with MAO inhibitors it may precipitate hypertensive crisis. The combination is contraindicated.

What this interaction means in plain words

Diethylpropion and Phenelzine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition increases stored and released catecholamines, producing an exaggerated pressor response.

What to do

Avoid together and for 14 days after stopping phenelzine. Use a non-sympathomimetic weight management approach.
