Summary

Diethylpropion is a sympathomimetic amine, and combining it with an MAO inhibitor can precipitate a hypertensive crisis. The label advises against using it with or soon after MAO inhibitors.

What this interaction means in plain words

Diethylpropion and Rasagiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition prevents breakdown of catecholamines and increases the release and effect of sympathomimetic amines.

What to do

Avoid the combination. Choose a non-sympathomimetic approach to weight management.
