Summary
MDMA is a stimulant that may partly counter dimenhydrinate's sedation, but this does not protect the patient. Both drugs can raise heart rate and body temperature, and dimenhydrinate's anticholinergic action may impair heat loss and worsen MDMA hyperthermia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dimenhydrinate and Methylenedioxymethamphetamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Opposing CNS effects, with additive anticholinergic and sympathomimetic effects on thermoregulation and heart rate.
What to do
Advise avoiding the combination, since masked sedation may encourage further drug use. Monitor temperature, heart rate and hydration if exposure occurs.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
