Summary
Dipipanone is a strong opioid analgesic, and combining it with a sedating tricyclic such as imipramine increases CNS depression. This can cause marked drowsiness, impaired coordination and respiratory depression. Tricyclics may also increase opioid-related constipation through their anticholinergic effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dipipanone and Imipramine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive CNS and respiratory depressant effects, with additive anticholinergic effects.
What to do
Start with low doses and titrate cautiously, monitoring sedation and respiratory rate. Counsel the patient about driving and about avoiding alcohol and other sedatives.
