Summary
Both drugs are catecholamine inotropes that stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors, and dopexamine also acts on dopamine receptors. Giving them together can produce additive tachycardia, arrhythmias, blood pressure changes and a fall in serum potassium.
What this interaction means in plain words
Dobutamine and Dopexamine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive beta-adrenergic agonism, with beta-2 mediated intracellular potassium shift.
What to do
Monitor heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure and serum potassium continuously, and titrate infusion rates to hemodynamic response. Replace potassium if levels fall.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
