Summary
Heparins can suppress aldosterone production by the adrenal gland, which may reduce potassium excretion. With olmesartan this can raise serum potassium, especially in renal impairment or diabetes. The thiazide partly counteracts the effect.
What this interaction means in plain words
Enoxaparin and Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Enoxaparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced suppression of aldosterone synthesis adds to angiotensin receptor blockade, reducing renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function if enoxaparin is continued beyond several days. Take extra care in patients with renal impairment or diabetes.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
