Summary
Low molecular weight heparins can suppress adrenal aldosterone secretion, which may cause potassium retention. Combined with an angiotensin receptor blocker the risk of hyperkalemia rises, especially in renal impairment or diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Enoxaparin and Olmesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Enoxaparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Heparin-induced inhibition of aldosterone synthesis adds to the reduced aldosterone effect from angiotensin receptor blockade, causing potassium retention.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium and renal function, particularly with prolonged enoxaparin use or in patients with kidney disease or diabetes.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
