Summary
Epinephrine is cleared in part by MAO and COMT, and MAO inhibition may potentiate its cardiovascular effects. Hypertension and tachycardia are possible, though selective MAO-B inhibition at usual doses carries less risk than nonselective inhibition.
What this interaction means in plain words
Epinephrine and Rasagiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Epinephrine belongs to Endocrine; Rasagiline belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive sympathomimetic effects with reduced catecholamine breakdown through MAO inhibition.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and heart rate when epinephrine is given, and use the lowest effective dose. Do not withhold epinephrine in anaphylaxis.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
