Summary
NSAIDs such as fenbufen can blunt the antihypertensive effect of ARBs and impair renal function, especially in older or volume-depleted patients. Both drugs can also contribute to hyperkalemia. The combination with a diuretic increases the risk of acute kidney injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Fenbufen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins reduces renal perfusion and potassium excretion, opposing ARB effects and adding to hyperkalemia risk.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium, and ensure adequate hydration. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time or choose an alternative analgesic.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
