Summary
NSAIDs blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of angiotensin receptor blockers and can precipitate acute kidney injury, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Fenoprofen can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Fenoprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal vasodilatory prostaglandins reduces glomerular perfusion while angiotensin II blockade removes efferent arteriolar tone, impairing filtration and sodium excretion.
What to do
Ensure adequate hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting the NSAID. Use the shortest NSAID course or choose an alternative analgesic where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
