Summary
This combines two angiotensin receptor blockers, since olmesartan is already present. Dual ARB therapy gives no added benefit and increases the risk of hypotension, hyperkalemia and renal impairment.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Eprosartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Hydrochlorothiazide-olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Duplicate angiotensin II receptor blockade producing additive effects on renal hemodynamics and potassium retention.
What to do
Avoid combining two ARBs; use a single ARB at an appropriate dose. If the combination is already in use, stop one agent and check potassium and creatinine.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
- Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
- What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
