Summary
Parecoxib is converted to the COX-2 inhibitor valdecoxib and, like other NSAIDs, can reduce the antihypertensive effect of ARBs and impair renal function. Hyperkalemia may also occur, particularly in elderly or dehydrated patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan and Parecoxib can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
COX-2 inhibition reduces renal prostaglandin synthesis, lowering renal perfusion and potassium excretion and opposing ARB effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, creatinine and potassium, and ensure hydration. Limit parecoxib to the shortest effective duration.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
