Summary

Non-acetylated salicylates have prostaglandin-inhibiting effects that can blunt the antihypertensive action of eprosartan. Together they can reduce renal function, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients, and may raise potassium.

What this interaction means in plain words

Eprosartan and Salicylates can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Inhibition of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins reduces renal perfusion and opposes ARB effects, while ARB-related reduced aldosterone adds to potassium retention.

What to do

Ensure adequate hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium when starting or changing the salicylate dose. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
