Summary
Formoterol and hydrochlorothiazide can each lower serum potassium, so together they may cause clinically significant hypokalemia. This may predispose to arrhythmias, particularly at high formoterol doses or in patients with hypoxia or other risk factors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Formoterol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide belongs to Cardiovascular; Formoterol belongs to Respiratory.
Why it happens
Beta-2 agonism drives potassium into cells while thiazides increase renal potassium loss, giving additive hypokalemia.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium in patients on regular or high-dose formoterol, and replace potassium as needed. The potassium-sparing effect of the eprosartan component may partly offset the loss.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
