Summary
Xipamide is a thiazide-like diuretic and duplicates the action of hydrochlorothiazide. Combining them increases diuresis, electrolyte loss (hypokalemia, hyponatremia) and the risk of hypotension and renal impairment, with the ARB adding to the volume-related effects.
What this interaction means in plain words
Eprosartan-hydrochlorothiazide and Xipamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive inhibition of distal tubular sodium chloride reabsorption causing excessive diuresis and electrolyte depletion.
What to do
Avoid duplicate thiazide-type therapy; if intentional, monitor electrolytes, renal function and blood pressure closely.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
