Summary
Both drugs can constrict blood vessels, so taking them close together may produce prolonged vasospasm and reduced blood flow to the heart, brain or limbs. Ergoloid mesylates has weaker vasoconstrictor activity than classic ergot alkaloids, but labeling for triptans still advises against combining them with ergot-type drugs.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ergoloid mesylates and Sumatriptan are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Additive vasoconstriction through 5-HT1B/1D agonism (triptan) and ergot-derived serotonergic and adrenergic receptor effects.
What to do
Avoid concurrent use and keep at least 24 hours between a triptan and an ergot-type drug. Choose a single agent for the acute indication.
