Summary
Rifabutin is an inducer of hepatic enzymes and may lower escitalopram exposure, potentially reducing its antidepressant effect. The induction effect of rifabutin is weaker than that of rifampicin.
What this interaction means in plain words
Escitalopram and Rifabutin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Escitalopram belongs to Central Nervous System; Rifabutin belongs to Anti Bacterial.
Why it happens
Rifabutin induces CYP3A4 and CYP2C19, increasing escitalopram metabolism.
What to do
Monitor for loss of antidepressant response during co-therapy and increase the escitalopram dose if needed within labeled limits. Reassess the dose when rifabutin is stopped.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
