Etrasimod can slow heart rate and delay AV conduction on initiation. With pimozide, a strongly QT-prolonging drug, bradycardia may raise the risk of torsades de pointes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Etrasimod and Pimozide can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.
Etrasimod belongs to Gastrointestinal Tract; Pimozide belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive effects of bradycardia from S1P receptor modulation and QT prolongation from pimozide.
What to do
Avoid starting etrasimod in patients taking pimozide where possible, or obtain cardiology advice and an ECG before starting. Monitor heart rate and QTc.
What to ask your pharmacist
