Summary
Both drugs can prolong the QT interval, so using them together may add to the risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsades de pointes. Pasireotide also causes bradycardia, which increases susceptibility, and the risk is greater if potassium or magnesium is low.
What this interaction means in plain words
Formoterol and Pasireotide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Formoterol belongs to Respiratory; Pasireotide belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic QT prolongation, with beta-agonist-induced hypokalemia as a further contributor.
What to do
Obtain a baseline ECG and correct potassium and magnesium before and during combined use. Repeat ECG monitoring if symptoms, bradycardia or other QT-prolonging drugs are present.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
