Summary
Foscarnet chelates divalent cations and commonly causes hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia and other electrolyte shifts that can trigger seizures and arrhythmias. Bowel-preparation products can cause fluid loss and further electrolyte changes, adding to this risk and to the risk of renal injury.
What this interaction means in plain words
Foscarnet and Sodium sulfate / ?magnesium sulfate / potassium chloride can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive fluid and electrolyte disturbances, with volume depletion increasing foscarnet nephrotoxicity.
What to do
Maintain hydration and check electrolytes, including calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphate, and renal function before and after bowel preparation. Correct abnormalities before continuing foscarnet.
