Summary

Tropisetron, like other 5-HT3 antagonists, can prolong the QT interval, and foscarnet may also prolong QT and cause electrolyte loss. The combination may increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.

What this interaction means in plain words

Foscarnet and Tropisetron can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Additive QT interval prolongation with foscarnet-related electrolyte disturbances.

What to do

Monitor ECG in at-risk patients and correct potassium, magnesium and calcium. Consider a less QT-active antiemetic if risk factors are present.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
