Summary
Systemic corticosteroids such as prednisolone raise blood glucose by increasing hepatic gluconeogenesis and peripheral insulin resistance. This can weaken the glucose-lowering effect of glimepiride and pioglitazone and cause hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes.
What this interaction means in plain words
Glimepiride-pioglitazone and Prednisolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Glimepiride-pioglitazone belongs to Endocrine; Prednisolone belongs to Endocrine.
Why it happens
Pharmacodynamic antagonism through glucocorticoid-induced insulin resistance and increased hepatic glucose output.
What to do
Monitor blood glucose more frequently during systemic prednisolone therapy and after dose changes or discontinuation. Adjust the antidiabetic regimen as needed, and reduce doses when the steroid is withdrawn to avoid hypoglycemia.
