Summary
Heparin can suppress aldosterone secretion and cause hyperkalemia. With an ACE inhibitor the risk of elevated potassium rises, especially in diabetes, renal impairment or prolonged use.
What this interaction means in plain words
Heparin and Moexipril can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Heparin belongs to Cardiovascular; Moexipril belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive reduction in aldosterone effect: heparin inhibits adrenal aldosterone synthesis and ACE inhibition lowers angiotensin II.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium when heparin is continued beyond several days, particularly in high-risk patients. Treat hyperkalemia or reconsider therapy if it develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
