Summary
Hyaluronidase breaks down tissue hyaluronan and spreads injected lidocaine over a wider area. This speeds onset of anesthesia but shortens its duration and raises systemic uptake, increasing the chance of systemic toxicity with large doses.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hyaluronidase and Lidocaine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Hyaluronidase belongs to Miscellaneous; Lidocaine belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Hyaluronidase depolymerizes interstitial hyaluronic acid, increasing local diffusion and vascular absorption of lidocaine.
What to do
Keep the total lidocaine dose within the maximum recommended limit and consider that repeat dosing may be needed because the block is shorter. Monitor for early signs of systemic toxicity such as perioral numbness, tinnitus and lightheadedness.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
