Summary

Indapamide is a thiazide-like diuretic, so combining it with a product that already contains hydrochlorothiazide duplicates therapy and raises the risk of hypotension, hyponatremia, hypokalemia and renal impairment. Valsartan partly offsets potassium loss but not reliably.

What this interaction means in plain words

Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Indapamide can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan belongs to Cardiovascular; Indapamide belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive thiazide-type inhibition of the distal tubule sodium-chloride cotransporter, increasing sodium and potassium excretion.

What to do

Avoid concurrent use of two thiazide-type diuretics unless specifically intended. If used, monitor sodium, potassium, creatinine and blood pressure.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
