Summary
Trilostane inhibits adrenal steroid synthesis including aldosterone, which can lead to potassium retention and sodium loss. With valsartan, which also reduces aldosterone effect, this raises the risk of hyperkalemia and hypotension.
What this interaction means in plain words
Hydrochlorothiazide-valsartan and Trilostane can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Additive suppression of aldosterone activity through inhibition of adrenal steroid synthesis and angiotensin receptor blockade.
What to do
Monitor serum potassium, sodium and blood pressure when the combination is used.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
