What this interaction means in plain words

Ibuprofen and Telmisartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Ibuprofen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

NSAIDs block vasodilatory prostaglandins and reduce afferent flow while ARBs dilate the efferent arteriole, lowering glomerular filtration, with added sodium retention.

What to do

Maintain hydration and monitor creatinine, potassium and blood pressure, especially at initiation. Avoid regular NSAID use in high-risk patients.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
