Summary
Subcutaneous immune globulin supplies pooled antibodies, including those against measles, mumps and rubella, that can neutralize live vaccine viruses. Seroconversion after MMR may therefore be diminished.
What this interaction means in plain words
Immune globulin sc and Measles mumps and rubella vaccine can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
Passively acquired antibodies neutralize live vaccine virus and reduce its replication and immunogenicity.
What to do
Follow immunization guidance on timing live vaccines relative to immune globulin, and consider serologic confirmation of immunity or revaccination in patients on regular replacement therapy. Patients with primary immunodeficiency needing replacement immune globulin generally should not receive live vaccines at all.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
