Summary

Indapamide can prolong the QT interval and cause hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia, which further raise the arrhythmia risk with quinine. The combination is therefore more hazardous than QT effects alone.

What this interaction means in plain words

Indapamide and Quinine can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Indapamide belongs to Cardiovascular; Quinine belongs to Anti Parasitic.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive QT prolongation, with diuretic-induced electrolyte depletion increasing proarrhythmic susceptibility.

What to do

Check potassium and magnesium before and during treatment and correct deficits; monitor the ECG, or consider an alternative to indapamide.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
