Summary

Iodinated contrast can cause acute kidney injury, and streptomycin is itself nephrotoxic and ototoxic. Given together, the risk of renal impairment rises, and reduced renal function leads to streptomycin accumulation and greater ototoxicity and vestibular toxicity.

What this interaction means in plain words

Ioversol and Streptomycin can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive nephrotoxicity, with secondary accumulation of renally cleared streptomycin increasing ototoxic risk.

What to do

Ensure adequate hydration and check serum creatinine before and after contrast exposure. Delay nonurgent streptomycin dosing or adjust the dose and monitor levels if renal function declines.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
