Summary
Both drugs lower blood pressure, and lofexidine also slows heart rate. Taken together they can cause additive hypotension, dizziness, syncope and bradycardia, particularly when lofexidine is started or the dose is raised.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lofexidine and Olmesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Lofexidine belongs to Central Nervous System; Olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
Additive pharmacodynamic blood pressure lowering from angiotensin receptor blockade plus central alpha-2 agonism with sympatholytic bradycardic effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure and pulse during lofexidine initiation and dose changes, and counsel the patient about orthostatic symptoms. Reduce the dose of one agent or hold the antihypertensive if symptomatic hypotension or bradycardia develops.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
