Summary
Lorcaserin is a serotonin 5-HT2C agonist. Together with an MAOI there is a risk of serotonin syndrome, with agitation, hyperthermia, clonus and autonomic instability.
What this interaction means in plain words
Lorcaserin and Phenelzine are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Additive serotonergic activity: receptor agonism plus MAO-blocked serotonin breakdown.
What to do
Do not combine; use another weight-management option. Allow a washout of at least 14 days after stopping phenelzine.
