Summary

Tricyclic-type antidepressants can potentiate the cardiovascular effects of beta-agonists, leading to tachycardia, arrhythmia or blood pressure changes. The effect is mainly of concern with systemic albuterol and is much less significant with inhaled doses.

What this interaction means in plain words

Albuterol and Maprotiline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Maprotiline blocks norepinephrine reuptake and may have additive adrenergic cardiovascular effects with beta-agonists; maprotiline also has QT-prolonging potential.

What to do

Monitor heart rate, blood pressure and ECG if albuterol is given orally or in high nebulized doses. Standard inhaled doses usually need no change.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
