Summary
Meclofenamic acid can weaken the antihypertensive effect of olmesartan. Together they can also impair renal function and raise potassium, particularly in elderly, volume-depleted or renally impaired patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meclofenamic acid and Olmesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Meclofenamic acid belongs to Musculoskeletal; Olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis causes fluid retention and afferent arteriolar constriction, which combined with ARB efferent dilation lowers glomerular filtration.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting or changing the NSAID, and maintain hydration. Prefer an alternative analgesic in high-risk patients.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
