Summary
NSAIDs can weaken the antihypertensive action of ACE inhibitors and can impair renal function when used with them. Risk is higher in the elderly, in dehydrated patients and in those with pre-existing kidney disease, and hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meclofenamic acid and Quinapril can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
NSAIDs inhibit synthesis of vasodilatory renal prostaglandins, reducing renal perfusion and opposing ACE inhibitor effects.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium at the start and during combined use, and ensure adequate hydration. Limit NSAID dose and duration, or use paracetamol instead where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
