Meloxicam can reduce the antihypertensive effect of telmisartan and together they may impair renal function, particularly in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Hyperkalemia may also occur.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meloxicam and Telmisartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Meloxicam belongs to Musculoskeletal; Telmisartan belongs to Cardiovascular.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandins reduces glomerular perfusion while angiotensin receptor blockade lowers efferent tone and potassium excretion.
What to do
Ensure hydration and monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting the NSAID. Use the lowest dose for the shortest time.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
