Summary
Tenofovir is eliminated by glomerular filtration and active tubular secretion, and NSAIDs can impair renal perfusion. Concurrent use, especially with high-dose or multiple NSAIDs, has been associated with acute kidney injury in tenofovir-treated patients.
What this interaction means in plain words
Meloxicam and Tenofovir df can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
NSAID-induced reduction of renal prostaglandin-dependent perfusion adds to tenofovir tubular toxicity and may reduce tenofovir clearance.
What to do
Prefer a non-NSAID analgesic such as paracetamol where possible. If an NSAID is needed, use the lowest dose for the shortest time and monitor serum creatinine and phosphate.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
