Summary

Papaveretum is a mixture of opium alkaloids that consists mainly of morphine, so combining it with morphine duplicates opioid therapy. The risk of respiratory depression, profound sedation and overdose is increased.

What this interaction means in plain words

Morphine and Papaveretum can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

Additive mu-opioid receptor agonism because papaveretum contains morphine.

What to do

Avoid combining the two and use a single opioid at a time, adding papaveretum's morphine content into total dose calculations. Monitor respiratory status if overlap is unavoidable.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
