Summary

Bacteriostatic tetracyclines may blunt the activity of bactericidal beta-lactams that need actively dividing bacteria. This antagonism is mainly shown in vitro and in older clinical data in meningitis. The clinical relevance is uncertain for many infections.

What this interaction means in plain words

Nafcillin and Tetracycline can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Low

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic antagonism: bacteriostatic inhibition of protein synthesis reduces bacterial growth needed for beta-lactam killing.

What to do

Avoid combining them in serious infections such as endocarditis or meningitis unless clearly justified. If used, monitor clinical response.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
