Summary
Noni juice has a high potassium content, and NSAIDs such as naproxen can cause potassium retention by suppressing renin and aldosterone. In patients with reduced kidney function or other potassium-raising drugs this may result in hyperkalemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Naproxen and Noni juice have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Additive effect of dietary potassium load and NSAID-induced reduction in renal potassium excretion.
What to do
Most patients with normal renal function need no change. Patients with CKD, or those taking ACE inhibitors, ARBs or potassium-sparing diuretics, should avoid noni juice or have serum potassium checked.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
