Summary

Naproxen can blunt the antihypertensive effect of olmesartan and, together with it, may impair renal function, especially in elderly or volume-depleted patients. Potassium may also rise.

What this interaction means in plain words

Naproxen and Olmesartan can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Naproxen belongs to Musculoskeletal; Olmesartan belongs to Cardiovascular.

Evidence level: High

Why it happens

NSAIDs reduce vasodilatory renal prostaglandins and, combined with angiotensin receptor blockade, lower glomerular filtration pressure and impair potassium excretion.

What to do

Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium after starting naproxen and ensure adequate hydration. Use the shortest NSAID course or an alternative analgesic in high-risk patients.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
