Summary
Naproxen can blunt the blood pressure lowering effect of quinapril. In volume-depleted, elderly or renally impaired patients the combination can cause acute kidney injury and hyperkalaemia.
What this interaction means in plain words
Naproxen and Quinapril can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Why it happens
NSAID inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis reduces renal blood flow and antagonises ACE inhibitor vasodilation and natriuresis.
What to do
Monitor blood pressure, serum creatinine and potassium when starting or changing the NSAID, and ensure adequate hydration. Use the lowest effective NSAID dose for the shortest time or choose paracetamol where possible.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
- Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
- Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
