Summary

Nebivolol is a highly beta-1 selective blocker, but at higher doses or in susceptible patients it can still blunt the bronchodilating effect of albuterol and may provoke bronchospasm in asthma. Albuterol may also reduce beta-blocker effect on heart rate.

What this interaction means in plain words

Albuterol and Nebivolol can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Pharmacodynamic antagonism at beta adrenergic receptors, with loss of cardioselectivity at higher doses.

What to do

Use the lowest nebivolol dose in patients with reactive airway disease and monitor respiratory symptoms and response to albuterol; reassess the need for the beta-blocker if bronchospasm occurs.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
  • Is there anything I should avoid, such as alcohol or certain foods, while on both?
