Summary
Combining an MAO inhibitor with the serotonergic antidepressant nefazodone can cause serotonin syndrome, with agitation, hyperthermia, tremor, autonomic instability and seizures. Nefazodone labeling prohibits use with MAOIs and requires washout intervals.
What this interaction means in plain words
Nefazodone and Rasagiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.
Why it happens
Additive increase in synaptic serotonin through MAO inhibition and nefazodone serotonin reuptake inhibition and receptor activity.
What to do
Do not co-administer; allow at least 14 days after stopping rasagiline before starting nefazodone and at least 7 days after stopping nefazodone before starting rasagiline.
