Summary

MAO inhibitors can potentiate the pressor effects of sympathomimetic amines. Although selective MAO-B inhibitors have a lower risk at recommended doses, norepinephrine given with rasagiline may cause an exaggerated rise in blood pressure.

What this interaction means in plain words

Norepinephrine and Rasagiline can interact in a way that may be serious. Using them together is sometimes necessary, but it needs a deliberate decision by the prescriber, a plan for monitoring, and clear advice on the warning signs to watch for.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

Additive adrenergic effects, with reduced catecholamine metabolism from MAO inhibition.

What to do

Use cautiously in critical care, starting at a low dose with continuous blood pressure monitoring and titrating slowly. Consider holding rasagiline if prolonged vasopressor use is anticipated.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Does the benefit of taking both outweigh the risk in my case?
  • Do I need any blood test, ECG or other check while on both?
  • What early warning signs should I watch for, and what should I do if they appear?
