Summary
Fluoroquinolones can lower the seizure threshold, and concurrent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including non-acetylated salicylates, have been reported to add to this risk. Seizures are uncommon but serious, especially in patients with epilepsy or other CNS risk factors.
What this interaction means in plain words
Ofloxacin and Salicylates have a small, usually unimportant interaction. Most people can take both; the pharmacist may still mention it so that any unexpected effect is recognised.
Why it happens
Fluoroquinolones inhibit GABA binding at GABA-A receptors, and some NSAIDs may potentiate this effect.
What to do
Avoid the combination in patients with seizure disorders or other seizure risk factors. Otherwise advise patients to report tremor, confusion or seizure activity promptly.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is there anything I should notice while taking both?
- Do I need to tell my doctor at the next visit?
