Summary

Combining a corticosteroid with an NSAID such as parecoxib raises the risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding. Selective COX-2 inhibitors carry somewhat less GI risk than non-selective NSAIDs but the risk is not eliminated.

What this interaction means in plain words

Parecoxib and Prednisolone can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

COX-2 inhibition and corticosteroid effects impair mucosal defense and healing, giving additive GI toxicity.

What to do

Use the shortest course possible and consider a proton pump inhibitor in high-risk patients. Counsel patients to report GI bleeding symptoms.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Should I take them at different times of day?
  • Does the dose of either medicine need to change?
