Summary

Phendimetrazine is a sympathomimetic anorectic that is contraindicated with MAO inhibitors. The combination can provoke a hypertensive crisis with severe headache, arrhythmia or stroke.

What this interaction means in plain words

Phendimetrazine and Rasagiline are not normally used together. Taking them at the same time is expected to cause harm or make one of them unsafe, so a different medicine is usually chosen for one of the two.

Evidence level: Moderate

Why it happens

MAO inhibition prevents breakdown of catecholamines, and indirect sympathomimetics release more norepinephrine, producing exaggerated pressor responses.

What to do

Do not use together or within 14 days of stopping an MAO inhibitor. Choose a non-pharmacologic or alternative weight-management approach.

What to ask your pharmacist

  • Is there an alternative to one of these two medicines for me?
  • If both are essential, who is monitoring me and how often?
  • Which symptoms mean I should stop and seek help straight away?
