What this interaction means in plain words
Primidone and Topiramate can affect each other. The combination is often manageable, but it may need a change of dose, a change of timing, or extra checks while both are taken.
Primidone belongs to Central Nervous System; Topiramate belongs to Central Nervous System.
Why it happens
Additive CNS depression, plus primidone (via phenobarbital) induction of enzymes that metabolize topiramate.
What to do
Monitor sedation, cognition and seizure frequency when starting, stopping or changing doses, and titrate topiramate to clinical effect. Counsel patients about driving and alcohol.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Should I take them at different times of day?
